Social Media and It’s Privacy

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, social media is “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos). [1]” In the past few decades, we have witnessed the rapid development of social media. Social media was so much simpler in the early days. Most of the peoples are using social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn. Nevertheless, other than that, there are various social media platforms to connect people for various reasons.

Social media experts have identified many sorts of online learning methods by doing lots of researches. According to DELVALLE INSTITUTE in Boston, there are five sorts of social media platforms.

> Social Networks

Let peoples connect online. Social network allows users and organizations connect online to share ideas and information, Examples: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn

> Media Sharing Networks

Allow users to share photos, videos, live videos, and media, either publicly or privately. Examples: Instagram, Snap Chat, YouTube

> Blogging

Let people publish content and discover content online. Blogs can help to gain more customers for businesses. Examples: Blogger, WordPress, Medium

> Micro Blogging

Users can upload concise content and share that content in a related subject using hashtags. Examples: Twitter, Tumblr

> Crowdsourcing

Allow users to share their opinions, start a discussion, and share news. Examples: Reddit, Quora, Digg

With the evolution of technology, social media becomes one of the powerful platforms of communication. Early social media sites were launched in the 1980s. Those days’ main social media motivation was communication. Then peoples began to attract rapidly to those communication-based social networks. IT professionals are then motivated to develop other types of social networks with that attraction.

Users of social media increased swiftly when social networks shifted to smartphones and tablets from the desktop. With the arrival of social media apps, users could take their communication with them whenever they want.

According to current statistics, forty-four percent of the world’s population uses some social media. This means social media companies have a massive amount of people’s personal information with them [3]. In the past few years, millions of social media users became concerned about their social media privacy. Most of the social media companies use that massive amount of personal information for marketing. They display ads on users based on their interests.

According to Risk Based Security, 2017 had the highest number of data breaches in history. More than 150 million records exposed in 2020. Cybercriminals try to steal user’s personal information, sensitive information and gain access to personal profiles.
